Beef hasn’t always been the most popular choice of meat for the Chinese (that honour goes to pork, abuden). But make no mistake in assuming that Chinese beef ball noodles are anything short of utterly delicious. Prepared in a variety of different methods, beef ball noodles are a frequent sight in many Chinese hawker centres and kopitiams. So to make the task of finding the best bowl of beef ball noodles a little easier, read on to find out our picks for the beef ball noodle stalls that make the cut in the Klang Valley!

1. Yung Kee Beef Noodles @ Jalan Kancil

A post shared by Zach (@charsiewpao) on

This one takes the cake for offering one style of beef noodles that most Malaysians would probably have not experienced. Manned by head chef and founder Albert, his promise to deliver an authentic Hong Kong style of beef noodle hasn’t faltered in the least. Originally run from a coffee shop in Pudu, Chef Albert has since moved his base of operations into a comfortable shop-lot that affords far more creature comforts for visiting patrons.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • The most unique feature to Yung Kee is without a doubt, its Hong Kong style of preparing beef ball noodles. The broth here isn’t merely cooked with beef parts, but is also flavoured with a special combination of herbs that give it a distinctive flavour that easily masks the otherwise pungent gaminess to beef. Think Vietnamese pho, but a lot richer.
  • On some days, when available, you may even order your beef noodles to be served with cuts of wagyu. Yes, wagyu beef!

2. Yang Mooi @ Jalan Perubatan 4

The Hakka method of preparing beef ball noodles is typically considered to be the most famous out of all. A good number of names come quickly to mind when talking about Hakka style beef ball noodles, but none are as underrated as Yang Mooi. Located in Pandan Indah, the hole-in-the-wall restaurant is often overlooked by those who aren’t familiar with the neighbourhood given its unassuming storefront.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Not to be overshadowed by the more popular beef ball noodle restaurants, Yang Mooi’s dry Hakka style beef ball noodles are just as delicious as their counterpart’s. Noodles are springy with a crisp bite, coated by a thick slather of minced beef that when tossed, imbues a savory sweetness that’s hard to beat.
  • The beef balls are no slouch either, springy to every bite. If you’re looking for variety, the ngau chap (beef mixture) contains a healthy heaping of different beef parts, from beef slices to tripe.

3. Uncle Cheng Special Beef Noodle @ Jalan SS 2/4

A post shared by D (@denicelzw) on

While most places in the Klang Valley area serve beef ball noodles that stay to the typical Hakka method of preparation, Uncle Cheng Special Beef Noodle takes the road less travelled with their Johor style of beef ball noodles. Attracting a neighbourhood crowd from within the wai sek gai area of SS2, this isn’t typically the first name that comes to mind for most KL-based food hunters.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • The Johor style of preparing beef ball noodles is almost unique to Uncle Cheng, as not many outlets in the Klang Valley area cook it this way. Lighter coloured due to their lack of a dark minced beef gravy, the dry beef ball noodles are tossed with sesame seeds and peanuts for a smoky, nutty crunch. The soup-based noodles on the other hand are soaked in a deliciously savoury broth that isn’t too salty.
  • If you go for the dry noodles, opt-in for the mixed beef parts, which tosses in a medley of beef slices, beef tendon, beef balls and more for a truly beefy finish.

4. Shin Kee Beef Specialist @ Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock

For a stall that calls itself a specialist by name, it’s only natural to assume that Shin Kee can live up to its haughty namesake. A visit to its premises will attest to the simple fact that if you’re looking for a no-frills beef ball noodle experience, Shin Kee will do your cravings justice without a doubt. But beware, for long queues and a cramped dining space are all part of the package!

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Dry beef ball noodles are the star of Shin Kee’s menu offerings, where customers are allowed to pick from their choice of yellow noodles, kway teow (flat rice noodles), beehoon (rice vermicelli noodles), and the crowd favourite loh she fan (rat-tail shaped noodles). Served with a side of beef ball soup containing beef tendon and beef balls, be sure to drizzle some of the piping hot soup over your noodles before consuming for an extra layer of flavor!

5. Lai Foong Beef Noodles @ Jalan Tun H S Lee

A post shared by Wesley Sing (@wesleysing) on

Operating in one of the oldest kopitiams in Kuala Lumpur, Lai Foong Beef Noodles has earned an equally storied reputation for itself in the time that it has been around. Consistently serving up bowls of beef noodles that have been bringing loyal customers back for decades, you can reliably assume that when it comes to beef noodles, Lai Foong is a name that is pretty hard to beat in the heart of KL.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • While you will be able to pick between the dry and wet versions of the beef noodles, our choice between the two will definitely have to be the soup-based wet noodles. Order it with kway teow (flat rice noodles) to go with, and you’ll be eager to sip up every last drop of a tasty broth that can only be achieved through hours of continuous boiling. You also get to pick between your choice of different beef parts to go with your noodles!

6. Soong Kee Beef Noodles @ Jalan Tun H S Lee

A post shared by SETHLUI (@sethluicious) on

Completing the list is Soong Kee. which needs no introduction to Munch readers who have been sticking around on our site. Previously recommended in one of our other articles, Soong Kee is perhaps the oldest running beef noodle shop within Kuala Lumpur, continuously operating since 1947. That’s even before Malaysia’s independence, if you weren’t already counting! Legacy aside, good food is what keeps customers and their kids coming back, so expect full tables and scarce seats!

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Whichever you pick, dry or wet, rest assured that these will be the best beef ball noodles that you will be able to get your hands on in KL city, bar none. The soup while deceptively clear, is chock full of beefy goodness and by request, can be filled with your choice of beef parts, from tripe, tendon, to the obligatory beef balls and slices.
  • The dry noodles are typically considered to be the crowd favourite, owing to their deliciously thick, rich minced beef sauce that coats over every strand of noodle. Truly worthy of a slurping finish!
