Top 5 Restaurants for the Best Japanese Curry in Klang Valley!
If you’ve been to a Japanese restaurant, chances are you would have encountered Japanese curry on the menu. A dish introduced to the Japanese during late 1860s by the British (this was when India was still a British colony), the humble spiced curry has since become a comfort food in the Land of The Rising Sun. How it differs from traditional Indian curry is in its general sweetness or lack of a strong, potent spice on the tongue. This makes it especially palatable for those who can’t handle their heat. But the fact also stands lah that Japanese curry is just so delicious. So where in KL do you get the best Japanese curry? Read on to find out! Listed in no particular order.
1. Shokudo Curry House @ Taman Paramount

A shokudō is explained by Japan Guide as being a casual restaurant, usually family owned, that serves cheap, everyday fare to common Japanese folk. In which case, Shokudo Restaurant in Taman Paramount has set quite a bar for itself in tackling something as inherently Japanese as a mom’n pop establishment. Located along a small string of equally popular eateries, Shokudo Curry House boasts a decidedly uncomplicated approach to decor; just like a traditional shokudō.
Reasons to visit/tips:
- True to its namesake, Shokudo only serves variations of the same dish: Japanese curry. In which case, it is only fair to assume that the curry truly is good enough to build an entire menu off on. From prawns to beef, to good old chicken cutlets fried with panko, regardless of your choice in protein, the accompanying curry is delicious. Creamy, rich and served hot, you’ll welcome the hearty portion of rice that they serve with your curry gravy.

2. Tonkatsu by Ma Maison @ Publika
View this post on Instagram
Tonkatsu translates from Japanese into ‘pork curry’. Ma Maison on the other hand, translates from French into ‘my house’. All in all, its name is a succinct enough summary of what Tonkatsu by Ma Maison serves best. A number of its outlets can be found scattered around the Klang Valley area, making it one of the more accessible options for those who are looking for a quick Japanese curry fix.
Reasons to visit/tips:
- Tonkatsu by Ma Maison takes its Japanese curry pretty seriously. So seriously in fact that they only specialise in two kinds of Japanese curry: chicken, or pork cutlet curries. But that’s not all, as Tonkatsu by Ma Maison even leaves table guides to teach diners on the finer aspects on enjoying tonkatsu, from providing such condiments as a sweet sauce and a spicy sauce, and even rock salt to bring out the inherent flavours to your choice of meat. Walao!

3. CoCo Ichibanya @ Pavilion

If you’re the kind of person who likes personalising their meals down to the ‘T’ when you eat, then CoCo Ichibanya is definitely the place to be. Offering its diners the benefit of choice, the dining experience here is comparable to what you see in Nandos, with its varying degrees of spice. Considered to be among the largest Japanese curry houses around, their presence is prolific, with over 1449 outlets internationally (according to their marketing materials, anyway).
Reasons to visit/tips:
- CoCo Ichibanya’s approach to Japanese curry is unique in the sense that you can build a meal of your choice from the ground up. Pick from your choice of protein (beef, chicken, seafood, or an egg omelette), the quantity of rice you would like for your meal (if you’re seriously hungry, consider 550g of rice), and the level of spice to go with. Regardless of whatever you pick however, the end result will always be a consistently delicious plate of curry drowning in gravy.

4. Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen @ Pavilion
View this post on Instagram
Established in 2010, Tonkatsu by Wa Kitchen claims to be the pioneer in tonkatsu restaurants within Malaysia. While that’s not a claim we can verify for ourselves, being around for well over 9 years should definitely earn it a place as one of the best places you can enjoy Japanese curry in town. Located at the topmost floor in Kuala Lumpur’s prime shopping centre Pavilion, one can surmise the dining experience here to be pretty luxe.
Reasons to visit/tips:
- Taking an immense pride in the quality of their tonkatsu pork cutlets, each one is deliciously breaded and fried to a crisp, before being served alongside rice and curry. This is a noteworthy mention, as the cutlets while fried, are never dry or tough. Tender and succulent, they yield easily to the bite, making every little nibble nothing short of heavenly!

5. The Tokyo Restaurant at The Table @ Lot10
View this post on Instagram
Featured on a number of food lists for their incredible ‘burnt’ 6th Avenue Cheesecake, The Tokyo Restaurant also happens to serve a delectable Japanese curry in their food menu. While menu offerings are based off on a fusion of Western and Eastern recipes, the Japanese curry here stays faithful to the original interpretation of the dish.
Reasons to visit/tips:
- Insisting on using a variety of imported ingredients, some directly from Japan, for the sake of authenticity, rest assured that the Japanese curry served here is nothing short of faithful to the original. The gravy is satisfyingly thick and full of flavour, but without rendering the rest of the dish too damp. The cutlet comes with a wonderful crunch, breaded with panko. What more can someone ask for?
