But today, when you can barely get by with RM10 for lunch in Kuala Lumpur, you’d be pleasantly surprised by how Warong Kaklong continues to sell nasi lemak bungkus (nasi lemak packets) at only 50 sen.
Yes, you heard right, precisely RM0.50, or 50 sen.

Located in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn in Cheras, Warong Kaklong can be found among a small cluster of similar stalls that mushroom around a local McDonald’s outlet. But make no mistake, rarely anyone who visits is ever here for french fries or a large Coca-Cola. On the contrary, its the RM0.50 nasi lemak packets that pull long lines at the very front of Warong Kaklong.

Deliciously fragrant, with a generous dollop of spicy-sweet sambal right over the top, the vendor methodically packages each little satchel of savory goodness in rapid-fire succession. Only around 200 packets are made daily, and with some customers buying up to 15 (yes, fifteen) packets of it at one go, they sell out really quickly! Feel free to also add a succulent, crispy piece of ayam goreng if you want a side of protein to go with your meal, only at RM3 extra.

But of course, the price is only one half of the success story. Taste is what keeps customers coming back, and with its rice cooked just enough to be compact and not damp while smelling of pandan leaves, paired along bright-red, viscous sambal pungent with the scent of ikan bilis (anchovies), there’s no disputing how good the food is. Sold for over 15 years now with its price unchanged, Warung Kaklong has an enduring presence in the local community. In addition, they also offer a wide array of Malay dishes for nasi campur (if you miss the RM0.50 nasi lemak), and cater for events too.
