If you like your pork, then you just have to visit Seng Kee. Located along Jalan Sultan just beyond the street entrance leading into Petaling Street proper, this eatery is most popular when the sun goes down. Go right for the claypot lo shi fan (rat-tail shaped noodles), where dark noodles are served in a searing hot claypot and topped with minced pork and a cracked egg, and the siew yok mee (roasted pork noodle), which are noodles stir-fried in dark sauce, topped with crispy morsels of roasted pork belly.

2. Hon Kee @ Jalan Hang Lekir

Hon Kee needs almost no introduction from us, if you seriously know your Petaling Street foodie hotspots. Owing to the simple fact that they are among the oldest running names you can find in Chinatown, Hon Kee has been serving its ever loyal patrons for over 70 (that’s seventy) years. It is most famous for its raw snakehead fish congee. Piping hot white congee is served alongside thinly sliced pieces of snakehead fish, which you are meant to dip into the porridge to cook.

3. Madras Lane @ Off Petaling Street

This one isn’t so much a stall as it is a whole locale on its own right. Madras Lane, named after the Madras Cinema that burnt down during the 1970s, plays host to a small crop of highly popular and underrated food haunts. Among them include a chee cheong fun and yong tau foo stall, as well as at least TWO kari laksa stalls that will leave your tongues waggling.
- If you’re visiting Madras Lane for the chee cheong fun, don’t be silly and just have yours with sweet sauce and sesame seeds. Order it with a side of yong tau foo to truly complete the experience, for the fish paste used in each piece has a snappy bite that attests to its freshness.
- But if you’re here to test your spice tolerance, then you should not miss out on the famous kari laksa stalls that are run alongside one another. Don’t worry, regardless of which you pick, you’ll still wind up with a highly fragrances, intensely flavourful kari soup to go with your assortment of seafood and yellow noodles. The amount of cockles you get in your bowl here are ridiculously generous, too!

If you come to Ching Kee, then you must either be a Petaling Street veteran or a serious food-hunter, as this hole-in-the-wall eatery is truly a hidden gem, even for those who know the area well. Best remembered for their chicken hor fun, Ching Kee churns out a great number of bowls to faithful patrons on a daily basis. The broth is sweet, particularly heavy on that umami flavour that you come to expect from seafood, which is owed to the generous use of prawn oil in the soup base. Couple that with shredded chicken, shallots and hor fun, and you’re set for a yummy good time!

Renowned all over the Klang Valley for generations now, everyone who visits Chinatown will no doubt wind up stopping at Sze Ngan Chye for its delicious serving of roast duck. Now in its second generation of family ownership, the stall continues to draw in long lines. The reason is simple: consistently succulent, delicious roasted duck with that coveted pok pok chui skin to bite into. But you’ve been warned, wait times can be excuriating, and there’s no telling how quickly their stock of roast duck will run out!

To kick it off, Kim’s Soya Bean, run near the very centre of Petaling Street, is a noteworthy mention. If you wait in line, do order their silken smooth bean-curd pudding drizzled with sugar syrup and soy-bean milk to quench your thirst with.

Petaling Street Air Mata Kuching is also another long-time staple that has been serving the Chinatown area since time immemorial. Air mata kuching for the uninitiated is made of a fruit called the mata kuching (cat’s eye), which is a close relative of the longan. Similar in taste and texture, this stall makes a delicious, sweet beverage out of it that is obviously best had with ice.
