There’s a HIDDEN Restaurant in Old Klang Road and It Serves the Best Hokkien Food!

But of course, being the oldest highway in Kuala Lumpur (it was open for public use in 1965!) it should be no surprise at all that this previous lifeline that connects Klang to greater Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya would play host to a good number of popular restaurants.
However, among the crop of famous names, have you ever heard of one little secluded spot called Pu Yuan?

Chances are unless you or someone you know is an expert-grade, platinum-certified food hunter (if you are one, we salute you), it’s easy to miss this one severely underrated steamed-fish restaurant that sits just off the main Old Klang Road highway. Hell, the restaurant is so inconspicuous, you hardly even notice it when you turn off from the highway and into the alley where it is located.
If you look really closely and pay attention to your surroundings, you’ll find a whitewashed ‘storefront’, with the words ‘炒薯粉小食馆’ in bright red brush strokes. A closed door stands in your way. Is it a mahjong den? A private residence?

Congratulations! You’ve found Pu Yuan Restaurant. Judging by the shabby way it looks, many diners would be put off by its initial appearance.
You’ll be greeted by a rather spartan dining space as you enter. Plastic chairs and tables are scattered in a tiny room lit with fluorescent lights, while you stand on a raw cement floor. It’s air-conditioned, but with poor ventilation, so be prepared to leave with your clothes smelling like a kitchen. However, do remember that this restaurant is best remembered for serving authentic Hokkien cookery, and it doesn’t get any more authentic than this!

Assuming that this is your first visit, you absolutely can’t go wrong trying their signature sweet-potato tapioca noodles, which are wok-fried to give it that signature wok hei (wok-smoked flavor). Jam packed with flavour from the pounded dried shrimp and fragrant seafood medley tossed in, each mouthful is a delightful balance between the chewy noodles, the slightly crisp bite of pounded dried shrimp, and lots of prawns or squid.

Then of course, there’s the splendid steamed fish-head. We recommend the steamed fish-head in mashed ginger, if you’re looking for something truly flavor packed. While the fish is suitably meaty, it’s the slight spice and strong fragrance inherent to the mashed ginger that truly makes this dish memorable. Drizzle the gravy over a plate of fluffy, hot white rice and be prepared to ask for seconds!

Given the warm reception that this eatery has garnered popularity among die-hard foodies, you can be rest assured that whatever you order off the menu is sure to be a true delight on the tongue.
But do bring along a friend who is proficient in Mandarin to ease the ordering process, as the menu is written in Mandarin and your server will most likely be speaking in the language too.
