Once considered to be a practice for the more affluent members of society in Victorian England, it has since trickled down to be a popular social activity that almost anyone with some time on their hands may partake in. Given that fact, there are simply no shortages of prime locations where you can act all atas with your Mat Salleh teh-o panas and scones. But if you ask us, these are truly some of the best places you can enjoy high tea in the Klang Valley. Listed in no particular order.
1. Hotel Majestic @ Tasik Perdana

Given its reputation as being one of the few remaining Colonial structures to be beautifully restored to its former glory, Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur is no doubt the first name we would recommend highly on this list. Built during the heyday of British Colonial rule in 1932, it continues to stand and cater to discerning clientele to this very day.
Reasons to visit/tips:
- Afternoon high teas don’t get any more period accurate than this. With your choice of four different settings located within the hotel’s grounds, you and your friends (or family) can live it up like it’s 1920 all over again. Tea time is split between the Tea Lounge, The Drawing Room, The Orchid Conservatory and finally the Atrium. Our pick of the lot would definitely have to be the Orchid Conservatory, which you may read more about in our article here. You get your usual tea-time set of sweet-treats and tea of course, but the ambiance here is what really seals the deal.

Now while we did say that high teas are typically a very antiquated affair, you’ll be surprised to know that there is nothing remotely antiquated about how TRACE in Elements Hotel goes about doing it. Located smack dab in the heart of Kuala Lumpur a stone’s throw away from KLCC, Elements Hotel is a pretty new name alongside a list of established players. But make no mistake, as Elements is part of the Marriot Group of hotels, and it means serious business when it talks about delivering an all-round 5 star hospitality experience.

- Aptly termed as the ‘Arteastry’ experience (a play on the word ‘artistry’ by combining the words ‘art’, ‘tea’, and ‘pastry’ together), TRACE’s afternoon tea extravaganza wows its audience with a presentation that you won’t find anywhere else. Forget about typical tea-time staples here, as there is a heavier emphasis here on imagination and creativity where recipes are concerned. Served on flat black plates and little tufts of faux-grass, you get such magical creations as savory macaroons and cones filled with shredded duck! And for extra flair, your pastry chef may even turn your entire tabletop into a dining experience of its own by covering it in abstract edible art.

Wait, we’re nowhere near done talking about unconventional afternoon teas! We can’t bring up funky, fresh and unique without giving WooBar in W Kuala Lumpur a mention. Best known around the world for their chain of critically acclaimed hotels that sport some of the most quirky, unusual and incredible designs, their first Malaysian outpost has only been in business for a little over a year or so. But considering how the elusive chanteuse herself Mariah Carey made it her hotel of choice during her stay here, that should more than vouch for their quality.

Now, the English aren’t the only people who know how to make tea time a proper affair. Right across the Channel, the French are also predictably tres tres chic with their afternoon teas. Which explains Ladurée’s reputation as being one of the must-visit cafes in Paris proper. Established in 1862, they have since expanded their presence, becoming the de-facto name when it comes to macaroons in France. So much so that they have since labelled themselves as a luxury purveyor of confectioneries, with cafes that look more like flagship fashion boutiques than actual F&B outlets. And now, you too can experience the grandiose excess that got Marie Antionette the chop at Pavilion!

- A truly decadent experience that showcases French savoir-faire at its finest, Ladurée’s melange of different macaroon flavours put on display on little tiered trays and display cases evoke a seriously opulent dining experience. High tea serves two, with your choice of their classic and premium flavours of macaroon. The former includes crowd favourites such as pistachio, orange bloom and coffee, while premium flavours come in guises such as a gold-foil wrapped chocolate macaroon. Prices are on the steep side, but remember, you’re paying for a true tête-à-tête experience.

Now, we can’t talk about afternoon tea without bringing up one of the most notable names in the tea-drinking circuit. Boasting some of the finest artisan teas in KL, the sheer array of blends available here are truly mind-boggling. That’s on top of the pomp and grandeur that typically comes with a teatime experience here, where having a pot of tea and some savouries doesn’t fall short of a truly riveting experience.

- While not technically English (they’re Singaporean, founded in 2008), this doesn’t lessen the credence that is associated with TWG as being one of the finest purveyors of quality teas in Kuala Lumpur. 6. Newens Tea House @ Starhill Gallery

For an afternoon tea experience that can only be rivaled by the entrant coming after this one, Newens Tea House in Starhill Gallery builds upon a truly prestigious heritage that can be traced all the way back to the Tudors in the 16th Century! Their claim to fame are the delectable ‘Maid of Honours’ tarts, which were reportedly so delicious, King Henry VIII had confiscated the recipe for them and deemed the dessert for Royal Consumption only. Thankfully by the hand of crafty domestic staff, the recipe has survived the test of history and continues to delight new fans through Robert Newens and his family’s chain of tea houses. One of which is now in Starhill Gallery!
Reasons to visit/tips:
- While notably on the pricier end of the spectrum, one has to bear in mind the sheer artistry in tea-making that Newens practices here. With tea brews as exquisite as the ones on offer, there can simply be no contest in both flavour and quality here. Nevermind the fact that its also bottomless! Then of course, we have to talk about the famed ‘Maid of Honour’ tarts, a dessert so highly coveted that even King Henry VIII had hoarded to himself. Filled with cheese curds, each bite is nothing short of a true delight. Money well spent, we say!

If you know the song Puttin’ On The Ritz, then you don’t need us to tell you that when it comes to luxury, The Ritz Carlton Hotel is hard to beat. The story begins with hotelier César Ritz’s founding the original Ritz Hotel in Paris, who found such incredible success that he was nicknamed the ‘king of hoteliers, and hoteliers to the kings’.
