Did You Know About This INCREDIBLE New Pork Restaurant Hidden in Bukit Bintang?
If you’ve ever had siew yoke (roasted pork belly) and you’ve been a faithful reader of Munch, you’ll know that a lot of us on the writing team (at least those among us who are non-Muslim) simply can’t get enough of it. Roasted with a crispy outer skin that is usually peppered with five spice powder with a cottony fat and flesh to go with underneath, there is no way we can resist a good siew yoke. But you already know all the usual suspects that offer some of the best siew yoke around, right? Of course you did. We told you about them! But we bet we never told you about this restaurant located along Jalan Sin Chew Kee.

Hidden pretty out of sight unless you know what you’re looking for, 8Haus is a relatively new establishment that has barely crested two years in business. So in that sense, one can consider the restaurant relatively #hipster, until it reaches a mainstream fever pitch. Which, judging by the constant full-house bookings every night, we think may happen sooner rather than later. There is a recipe for success that many restaurateurs adhere to when trying to appeal to the millennial generation: an Instagram-worthy dining space, and really good food that doesn’t break the bank. 8Haus has the first bit covered the moment you walk in.
Housed in a pre-war shop-lot circa 1920s Malaya, the facade of the building is painted in a vibrant Tiffany blue. Pretty unusual when you consider how it houses a restaurant. Walk in and you’ll feel right at home with the rustic, if not spartan interior that plays with an industrial theme. Space is ample, but don’t let that deceive you as seats are snapped up very quickly, if they aren’t already reserved ahead. Honestly, we warrant that you’ll find more reserved tables than you would empty walk-in ones.

Why, you ask? Well we’re just about to get right to it! You see, the signature dish that everyone comes to 8Haus for is their roasted pork belly roulades. Made in really limited numbers for each dinner service, they are usually booked by diners ahead of time to ensure that they’ll get a taste. Made true to the Chinese style of siew yoke, each roll of their signature house-special roasted pork belly has a pok pok chui crispiness to its dark orange skin. Then, there’s the cottony, melt-in-your-mouth layer of fat and lean meat that yields easily to the bite. It also comes with a spicy dipping sauce on the side for kick, which we definitely recommend you eat with.

But we also mentioned a pork-based menu, and 8Haus doesn’t disappoint in that front either. Presenting a confluence of Western and Asian recipes, much of what you can order here is equal parts familiar and new. Take the XO Haus Linguine Pasta for example, where linguine pasta is served tossed with XO sauce, a seafood based condiment popular in Chinese cuisine. Ever so slightly spicy without being too scalding on the tongue, this dish offers diners a little seafood brine to their otherwise porky meal. Then there is the Soup Linguine, where linguine noodles are cooked and served with a deliciously flavourful pork broth, almost like a Hong Kong styled pork noodle soup.
All in all, if you’re keen on looking for a new dining haunt around town and want to skip the usual suspects, give 8Haus a call! We should remind you again though that it is best that you reserve a serving of pork roulade ahead of time. Happy dining!
