If you’ve been a keen reader on Munch, then you’ll no doubt know that the best char kway teow in Malaysia is from Penang. Honestly la. even if you don’t read Munch you also know that. But for a lot of people living in the Klang Valley, traveling to Penang means having to drive at least 4 hours to the island state. Which is tolerable during the holiday season, but what if you want char kway teow right now?! OK OK, chill. That’s why you have us at Munch. Read on to find out our picks for the best char kway teow in Klang Valley! Listed in no particular order.

1. Robert Char Kway Teow @ Damansara Kim

Kicking things off on this list is a stalwart favourite of many University Malaya alumni, both young and old. Located in Say Huat Restaurant, Robert Char Kway Teow boasts a reputation for serving some of the most delicious, seafood-laden char kway teows in the Klang Valley. Some patrons have been visiting this stall for decades, and swear by it, years after they’ve graduated from UM. That should be indication enough of the quality! Though do bear in mind that they have since moved to Golden Kim Wah Restaurant.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Owing to the fact that Robert, the chef, doesn’t skimp on fresh seafood, each bite of his char kway teow is filled with an umami sweetness. That’s on top of the smokiness from a hot wok that keeps the flat rice noodles ever so slightly charred. Prices are a little on the steep side, but well worth every penny.

2. Frankie Char Kway Teow @ Damansara Perdana

If you’re headed around the Damansara Perdana area and you ask anyone where you should go for char kway teow, they’ll probably wind up telling you to look for 888 Restaurant. Easy to remember by name, 888 Restaurant plays host to the highly acclaimed Frankie’s Char Kway Teow. Run by the nephew of another famous Penang-based char kway teow chef, it’s no wonder why each plate of char kway teow served here is incredibly addictive.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Using thinner kway teow noodles, you’ll be glad to know that char kway teow served here isn’t overly greasy or wet. You also get your pick between chicken or duck eggs in your plate of char kway teow, but for the discerning foodie, duck eggs are the way to go. But beware, as their duck eggs run out pretty quickly!
  • Don’t be greedy when you order from Frankie’s Char Kway Teow, as a large portion can seriously mean large. For a single-serving meal, go for the medium!

3. Koay Teow King @ Damansara Utama

A post shared by Edvard Loh (@edvard_loh) on

Not necessarily the first name that comes to mind when you look up ‘Best Char Kway Teow in Klang Valley’, Koay Teow King is a relatively new player to the CKT (char kway teow) scene. Foodie snobs may sneer at its clean, comfortable air-conditioned premises (because clearly if it isn’t by the roadside, it isn’t tasty). But when considering the brisk business that keeps the staff busy at all hours of the day, you have good reason to forgo the stereotypes and give this place a go!

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • You get a few options where variety is concerned here. Opt for the traditional duck egg char kway teow and you’ll get all the same wok-fried wok hei that is so revered in Chinese cookery. But for a truly indulgent experience, order the crab meat char kway teow, served with shredded crab meat over the top. Prices are understandably on the expensive side, considering the ingredients. But no penny is wasted on the amazing char kway teow here!

4. Penang Famous Char Kway Teow @ Hutong by Lot10

A post shared by Time Out Kuala Lumpur (@timeoutkl) on

Lot10 Hutong’s premise of delivering all the best Chinese hawker eats under one roof has proven to be a wildly successful formula, especially for those visiting KL and want a quick way to sample a majority of the locale’s famous dishes in one go. Among some of the most well remembered stalls in Hutong is the Penang Famous Char Kway Teow, offering diners all the tasty goodness of Penang char kway teow with none of the sweaty hassle.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Again, the duck egg char kway teow proves wildly popular here for the most obvious of reasons. When served up hot, the smell of cooked eggs scrambled and fried over strips of well charred kway teow noodles makes for a seriously good plate of CKT. That’s on top of the added convenience of comfortable seating and air-conditioning.

5. Tiam Fatt Char Kway Teow @ Taman Melawati

A neighbourhood favourite that draws in a particularly avid crowd of repeat customers, Tiam Fatt Char Kway Teow is typically not the biggest name when it comes to char kway teow lists. But just because it’s underrated doesn’t mean it can’t take the fight to the more established names on our list. A look around the many tables that order their signature plate of char kway teow should be plenty indication of how good it is.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • If you’re at Tiam Fatt, you’ll run into two different names that both share ‘Tiam Fatt’ in them. The first being Tiam Fatt Three Big Prawn Char Kway Teow, and the other being Tiam Fatt Duck Egg Char Kway Teow. Rest assured, both names refer to the same stall and you can choose to have both three big prawns and duck eggs in your char kway teow. The size of the prawns are truly large, making for a crisp bite alongside your undoubtedly fragrant, spicy plate of wok-fried flat rice noodles.

6. Aunty Gemok Char Kway Teow @ Kelana Jaya

A post shared by Hardwi Satrio Pinandityo (@duwisatrio) on

Now while a lot of char kway teow purists might turn their noses at the premise of a Halal, pork-free take on the dish, you will be very pleasantly surprised that pork or not, some places can churn out some very delicious, Muslim-friendly alternatives to your typical char kway teow. Take for instance, Aunty Gemok Char Kway Teow in Restoran Jamal Mohamed.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Being the only Halal take on char kway teow on our list, you know that this place has got to be wicked delicious to earn a spot. Especially when they have to prepare it without one of the core ingredients that people say make char kway teow so yummy. Yet, one bite of Aunty Gemok’s char kway teow, and you wouldn’t even realise that the pork is missing. Not lacking in flavour or wok hei, this is an absolutely faithful interpretation to a Chinese favourite that doesn’t skimp on anything, despite being pork-free!

7. Yong Sheng Restaurant @ USJ14

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by A Forever-Hungry Community (@burpplekl) on

Coming in highly recommended by one of our Penangite writers on the team, Yong Sheng Restaurant in USJ14 purportedly serves some of the most authentic Penang-style char kway teow. For those of you who can’t discern the difference, Penang char kway teow tends to be of a dryer variety, but never to a point where it is charred. That, and the noodles used are thinner in comparison. So how does Yong Sheng’s char kway teow stack up? Pretty well, actually!

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • Penang-style char kway teow is the biggest draw for those who visit Yong Sheng Restaurant, without a doubt. The char kway teow here remains faithful to the recipe used back on the island state, and is predictably wok-fried to a dry, fragrant finish. Never damp, never too greasy, and full of fresh prawns and sweet waxed sausages, you simply can’t get any better. Unless you travel to Penang, of course.
