5 Prawn Mee Stalls in Klang Valley You Seriously NEED To Try!
There has always been a constant debate between KLites and Penangites about what constitutes as prawn noodles. On the mainland, most people living in the Klang Valley tend to refer to the signature noodles cooked in bright-red broth as har mee, or literally ‘prawn noodles’ in Cantonese. Penangites however, call the very same bowl of noodles Hokkien mee, or Hokkien noodles. Which leads to a lot of confusion as in KL, Hokkien mee refers to noodles wok-fried in black sauce. Regardless of whatever you want to call it, we can all agree that prawn noodles are irresistibly delicious, especially for seafood lovers. (That’s just about anyone who isn’t allergic to seafood) In which case, where do we find some of the best prawn noodles in Klang Valley? Let’s find out! Listed in no particular order.
1. Soon Lee Prawn Mee

Soon Lee, located in Jalan Ipoh’s ‘wai sek gai’, basks in the general reputation that the area shares for exceedingly good street food. We can say with a substantial measure of confidence that if you ever make a trip down here, there will be something to whet your appetite at every passing corner. But you will be remiss to skip out on one of the locale’s best known names for good food, as evidenced by the number of pictures celebrities both local and abroad who have visited this outlet that adorn its walls.
Reasons to visit/tips:
- For a lot of Penangites living and working in the Klang Valley, Soon Lee is a home away from home, where you can find some of the most authentic prawn noodles. The prawn noodles are so good, some Penangites even go so far as to claim that they put a good number of the stalls back home to shame. High praise, when you consider their picky tastebuds! Richly coloured with prawn oil, every slurp delivers nothing short of a scrumptious experience for the tongue. And for those of you who like spice, have it with a dollop of Soon Lee’s signature chili paste!

2. Restoran Yong Len @ TTDI

While most people tend to associate Taman Tun Dr Ismail as a hotbed for enterprising young restaurateurs, considering the number of popular cafes that operate in the area, you’ll be surprised to know some more laid-back, no-frills dining experiences can be had here too. Restoran Yong Len, which is more neighbourhood kopitiam than Instagram worthy hotspot, is among the rare few eateries that hasn’t caved in completely to the hipster cafe wave that has swept the area by storm. And thank God for that!
Reasons to visit/tips:
- Hailed for serving the best prawn noodles you will find within the TTDI neighbourhood, tables from Restoran Yong Len often spill down over the side of the curb and even onto the streets. Seats are packed, and even if they go vacant, they’re quick to be snapped up in the blink of an eye. You really have to be quick when you eat here! What about the prawn noodles in that case? Superb, that’s what! Every table here features at least one bowl of the restaurant’s signature prawn noodles, and with its strong prawn flavour and minimal use of MSG, it isn’t hard to understand why.

Reasons to visit/tips:

5. Choon Prawn Mee House @ Taman Paramount
View this post on Instagram
While some Hokkien mee purists might object to the ‘prawn mee’ designation that Choon Prawn Mee Houses goes by, they sure can’t object to the incredible har mee/Hokkien mee that this restaurant churns out. Packed to the rafters even during off-peak hours, a constant flow of customers keeps the staff on their toes constantly.
Reasons to visit/tips:
- The secret to good prawn noodles doesn’t just lie in seafood, but an equal measure of pork as well. Combine the two in a broth, and you’ll have a delicious base upon which to build the ideal bowl of har mee/Hokkien mee with. While it may be customary to have your noodles with a dollop of spicy chili paste to go with, the broth here proves so flavourful that you can skip out on the spice altogether!
