Ikan bakar, or quite literally ‘grilled fish’ in Malay, comprises of a wide variety of seafood that is cooked over an open grill to charred perfection. Typical to Malaysia and Indonesia, you’ll find plenty of places within the region that will serve up a crispy, smoky plate of whatever seafood suits your palette. If you’re a fan of ikan bakar or are curious to give it a go, then you should get your ikan bakar fix at these restaurants in the Klang Valley!

Most ikan bakar fans know for a fact that Jalan Bellamy hides a huge number of ikan bakar stalls ripe for the picking, but which one do you pick? Well, there’s not much dispute where that question is concerned: Kedai Kak Jat. Be prepared to sweat it out when you stand in line for some of the most deliciously grilled seafood around, because the wait tends to be tedious!

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • A wide variety of fish and seafood are available to order from the grill, such as stingray and tilapia. The marinade used by the proprietor purportedly gives the fish here a crisper texture as compared to the other stalls.
  • Grilled squid is equal parts smoky and yielding to the bite.

Any seasoned ikan bakar hunter would be able to tell you that a good grilled fish is only one half of the story. The other half comes in the form of the condiments that are available to pair with your crispy on the outside, but flaky and buttery smooth inside ikan bakar. In which case, Restoran Arang Ikan Bakar in Shah Alam’s Section 16 neighbourhood deserves your attention.

Reasons to visit/tips:

  • A variety of condiments here make this ikan bakar place a favourite haunt for many. The restaurant’s most unique condiment offering is its sambal kwinin, which is a spicy sambal paste made out of a fruit called kwinin, a species of mango. As a result, the sambal supposedly tastes spicy and sour.

Running for well over 15 years now, Pak Din’s ikan bakar store is a stalwart name around the Tanglin area. Walk up to it, and be prepared to have your sense of smell absolutely pampered by the wafting decadence of smokily grilled seafood marinated with turmeric powder, giving the otherwise milky white flesh a slight hint of yellow spice.
Reasons to visit/tips:
  • While the ikan bakar is assuredly delicious, the main draw to this stall has to be its signature sauce which is served alongside your grilled seafood. Consisting of bird’s eye chilli, onions, tamarind juice and a list of other ingredients that the owner keeps mum, this one is sure to leave a lingering impression on the tongue.
